Burlington County Phone Directory History

Burlington County holds a unique place in New Jersey history. Property records here date back to 1694, making them one of the oldest continuous collections in the state. The first New Jersey agreement for recording land came in 1676 with "The Consessions and Agreements of the Proprietors, Freeholders and Inhabitants of the Providence of West New Jersey." The Conveyancing Act of 1799 later established that every conveyance must be recorded or it is void. In Freeholders of Middlesex v. Conger (1902), the court ruled that property records management was constitutionally conferred on clerks.

The Burlington County Clerk's Office history page describes how this tradition stretches back over 500 years to when clerks maintained property transfer documents in England. Today the office holds over 1.7 million documents and continues to digitize historical records.
