The County Clerk is a constitutional officer elected for a five-year term. The office records deeds, mortgages, and property liens. It also processes passports and photos, handles notary public commissions, manages vote-by-mail ballots, records DD214 military discharges, and issues veteran and county ID cards. Middlesex County Land Records Search
Middlesex County keeps an extensive set of land records. Deeds go back to 1784. Mortgages date to 1766. The online land records portal provides access around the clock. You can search by name, document type, recording date, book and page number, or instrument number. The system supports wildcards and partial name searches to catch different spellings.
Online coverage starts at 1929 for deeds, 1950 for mortgages, and 1958 for other documents. Records before these dates must be searched in person at the clerk's office or through the New Jersey State Archives. The State Archives hold deeds from 1784 to 1901 on 91 reels of microfilm. They also have mortgage records from 1766 to 1861 on 14 reels. An ancient deeds collection covers 1877 to 1942 with property transfers that may not appear in the standard series.
All recorded documents in Middlesex County include a Recording Data Cover Page as required by N.J.S.A. 46:26A-5. This page shows the instrument number, book and page reference, recording date, document type, party names, property block and lot numbers, municipality, and sale price.

Middlesex County Recording Fees
Middlesex County charges set fees for recording property documents. The first page of a deed costs $40.00. A mortgage first page is $30.00. Each extra page adds $10.00. Amendments, assignments, and releases each cost $40.00 for the first page. There is a $6.00 indexing fee per name after the first five names on a document.
Copies of recorded documents cost $2.00 per page when made by staff. Certification adds $10.00 per document on top of the copy fee. Self-service copies are $0.05 per page for letter size and $0.07 per page for legal size. A mortgage may be canceled on the original recorded document for a flat fee of $20.00 each. Pages larger than 8.5 by 14 inches add $10.00 per page. Make all checks payable to "Middlesex County Clerk."
Under the Open Public Records Act (N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1), the Middlesex County Clerk must respond to records requests within seven business days. Electronic records sent by email are often free. Standard OPRA copy fees are $0.05 per letter-size page and $0.07 per legal-size page. Special service charges may apply for large or complex requests but must reflect actual direct costs as outlined in N.J.S.A. 47:1A-5.
