County Clerk John S. Hogan runs the Bergen County Clerk's Office from the Administration Building in Hackensack. The office handles land records, passport services, trade name registration, and notary services. For general questions, call 201-336-7011. The Bergen County Clerk's Office also offers "Around the County" satellite services that bring passport and outreach programs to locations throughout the county. This saves residents a trip to Hackensack for routine needs.
The Registry Division is where most phone directory inquiries about property records begin. Bergen County Directory Search Online
Bergen County keeps an extensive online database of land records. Deeds and mortgages dating back to 1989 and all other documents from 2000 forward can be searched and viewed for free. The online system also includes deed images from 2004 and mortgage images from 2007. More images from earlier years are uploaded on a rolling basis. You can search by grantor or grantee name, document type, date range, and property identifiers.
Under N.J.S.A. 47:1A-1, government records must be readily accessible. Bergen County meets this standard through its online search tools. The public land records portal contains documents recorded from January 1, 1970 to the present day. Users can view recorded documents without visiting the Clerk's Office. As of May 2025, the office also permits electronic recording through Corporation Service Company for attorneys, title companies, and individuals.

Bergen County Recording Fees
Bergen County sets its recording fees by state legislation. A deed costs $40 for the first page and $10 for each page after that. Mortgages start at $35 for the first page plus $10 per additional page. Marginal notations cost $10 each. Name indexing beyond five names adds $6 per extra name. These fees apply to all documents filed at the Bergen County Clerk's Office.
Two surcharges also apply. The Homelessness Trust Fund adds $5 to most recorded documents. Assignments of mortgage, lis pendens, and notices of settlement are exempt from this charge. Since May 1, 2019, an additional $2 surcharge covers deeds, mortgages, cancellations, discharges, releases, tax sale certificates, redemptions, street vacations, and municipal recordings.
